What is a ISA Certified Arborist?

The term "arborist" can mean many things, and not all who use the title have the expertise or qualifications necessary to care for your trees properly. Be cautious of individuals who show up and offer vague treatments or loose pricing with a chainsaw in the truck, they generally offer cheap services— and they often lack the skills and knowledge needed for professional tree care.

ISA Certified Arborists are trained professionals who specialize in the care of trees and woody plants.

To become an ISA Certified Arborist, individuals must have at least three years of practical arboriculture experience or a combination of related education and experience, and pass a comprehensive 200-question exam covering tree biology, pruning, pest management, and more. Certification also requires adherence to a professional code of ethics and ongoing education to stay current in the field. This designation ensures arborists have the expertise to provide safe, knowledgeable tree care.

Their work includes pruning, fertilization, pest and disease management, consulting on tree health, and performing complex tasks like tree planting, transplantation, and removal when needed.

As Peter Gerstenberger, Director of Safety and Education for the Tree Care Industry Association, advises, "With potentially thousands of dollars, the safety of your property, and its long-term appearance at stake, take the time to carefully select a qualified company." At Momentum Tree Experts, we ensure the highest standards by having a ISA Certified Arborist consult and lead the treatment on every job, so you can trust your trees are in expert hands.

What do I look for in hiring a Tree Care Expert?

When you hire a TCIA-member tree care company — like Momentum Tree Experts  — you are assured that the company you are hiring has access to the most recent information on tree care practices, and that they are insured and/or bonded to protect you and your valuable property. Verify additional professional affiliations the company might have, such as membership in International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

You can find our certifications on this website!

You can also seek recommendations from neighbors, friends or business associates who you know have had professional tree care work done in the past.

Read testimonials from happy Momentum Customers.

When reviewing companies, look for information about the company: number of years in business, professional affiliations, licenses, certification, etc.  Also check with your City Hall and see if your municipality requires licensing for arborists; many communities do.

Momentum is in the application process (will be the only one in SW CO!) for TCIA Accreditation, which is a voluntary program that credentials companies which meet stringent criteria for professionalism, employee training, state and federal safety regulations, business ethics and customer satisfaction. Under the process, we undergo an extensive review and a comprehensive audit of professional and business practices aimed at safeguarding consumers.

Accreditation is the only business practices and compliance program for tree care companies in America. Companies accredited by TCIA are required to provide documented proof in many areas that protect consumers. When you hire an accredited tree care company, you can rest assured that TCIA has checked for proper insurance, applicable business and pesticide licenses, and customer service that is reliable and ethical. Make an informed decision – choose a company with the TCIA Accreditation "seal of approval."

Should I try to do tree work myself?

Care for your trees needs to be done by skilled, trained and insured professionals, both for the health and beauty of your trees and for your safety and financial well-being.

For your safety, do not perform tree work. Taken from published reports, TCIA maintains a monthly list of Accident Briefs that outlines the sad details of homeowners getting severely injured or killed when attempting their own tree work. If you are at all uncertain about what could happen by attempting your own tree work, contact Momentum Tree Experts for proffesional help.

What Can Be Done To Prevent Beetle Kill?

The challenges associated with monoculture and high-density forests, particularly in Ponderosa and Fir/Spruce dominant stands, are significant. Our objective is to address cultural and environmental stressors in order to cultivate a robust and resilient forest ecosystem. By implementing strategic selective thinning and utilizing tree climbing techniques for canopy pruning, we aim to minimize competition among trees and increase sunlight penetration. This approach will reduce the energy expended by trees to outgrow their neighbors. Furthermore, selective thinning will allow more snow to reach the ground, preventing evaporation from the limbs and increasing moisture levels. This, in turn, promotes better sap production and availability. Additionally, the increased sap flow can help capture insects before they damage the trees' cambium by trapping the adults and preventing egg laying.

Additional measures can be taken such as dead wood and storm damaged limb removal and Mistletoe mitigation. These stressors are largely influential in the overall health of individual trees and in turn the stand as a whole.

What time of year should I contact Momentum?

Working on trees throughout the year is not only possible but also beneficial. During the summer months, our pruning and removal services are in high demand, making it the busiest season. To ensure availability, we encourage clients to schedule their tree maintenance early. This proactive approach guarantees that their trees receive the necessary care when its best for the recommended treatment.

Although pruning  and removal can generally be performed year round, winter, presents a unique set of advantages for tree maintenance. The dormancy of trees during colder months reduces stress on them when pruned, and the absence of foliage provides clearer visibility for assessing and removing any hazardous branches. Additionally, the frozen ground can minimize the impact on the surrounding landscape, making it easier to access and remove trees without causing damage to the property.

When Did Momentum Tree Experts Start?

“I spent my childhood exploring the vast expanse of eastern hardwood forest, becoming lost in the exploration and discovery of nature. The dream of helping other people find the same in their forest and individual trees started almost 20 years ago.  As my knowledge and understanding of my natural environment expanded, I found a greater purpose of personal discovery and I began teaching and helping people explore and seek their discoveries in their natural space. Thats why I started Momentum Tree Experts.  There was a need for higher level management and relationship building within SW Colorado.”

When Did Moses Cooper Start In The Industry?

I have been actively involved in commercial forest and tree restoration since 2004. I have gained valuable experience with the Colorado State Forest Service, the United States Forest Service, and five private companies. Over a period of three years, I had the privilege of working alongside a Board Certified Master Arborist and a nationally ranked competitive tree climber. I am thankful for the numerous opportunities and guidance I have received from several mentors and an ISA Certified Arborist. I became a ISA Certified Arborist in 2014 and maintain and hold this certification with respect.

How to Talk to Your Aspens About Sudden Aspen Decline (SAD)

How to Talk to Your Aspens About Sudden Aspen Decline (SAD)

By Momentum Tree Experts

Ah, the beloved aspen. With their shimmering leaves, dazzling golden colors in the fall, and a root system so interconnected it could teach us humans a thing or two about community, aspens hold a special place in our hearts and landscapes here in Durango, Colorado. But even these majestic trees aren’t immune to the challenges of life. Sudden Aspen Decline (SAD) is no laughing matter—though we’ll try to lighten the mood while discussing it. So, if you’ve noticed your aspens looking a little, well, sad, here’s how to talk to them about it—and more importantly, how Momentum Tree Experts can help.

Start the Conversation Gently

First things first: it’s not your aspen’s fault. They’ve been through a lot. Climate change, long lasting drought, bark damage from that one rogue deerâ€Ķ life hasn’t been easy. Tell your aspens, “It’s okay, you’re doing your best.” Acknowledge their struggles. Remind them that they’re the gem of the neighborhood, even if they’re feeling under the weather. A little love can go a long way.

What’s SAD and Why Should We Care?

SAD is a complex condition affecting aspen trees, often stemming from stressors like drought, temperature fluctuations, and poor soil health. In Durango, our aspens face some serious hurdles:

  • Extreme weather: Hot summers and cold winters wreak havoc on their delicate root systems.
  • Cytospora canker: A sneaky fungal infection that preys on weakened trees.
  • Stand Disturbance: Replicating the natural stand disturbances vital for aspen growth is challenging in urban forests, as the decline of mature trees can hinder regeneration and disrupt the balance needed to sustain healthy aspen communities.

When these factors combine, they leave aspens vulnerable to infections, pests, and ultimately, a declining population. Think of it as the tree version of burnout.

Our Prescription for Perking Up Your Aspens

Your trees don’t have to face SAD alone. At Momentum Tree Experts, we specialize in giving your aspens the TLC they need. Here’s how we can help:

1. Pruning for Health and Aesthetics

Overgrown, diseased, or damaged branches aren’t just unsightly—they’re invitations for Cytospora canker and other infections. By professionally pruning away infected or dead branches, we improve airflow, reduce fungal spread, and help your trees focus their energy on growing strong and healthy. Plus, a well-pruned aspen looks fantastic in any season.

2. Removing Severely Infected Trees

Sometimes, tough love is the best love. If a tree is too far gone, removing it prevents the spread of disease to others in the grove. Think of it as protecting the whole grove, even if it means saying goodbye to one member. Our team can safely and efficiently remove infected trees while preserving the overall health of your landscape. Another benefit is aspen regeneration from the root system, this is something to celebrate, its strength in numbers!

3. Encouraging Young Aspens

Aspens are resilient, and their root systems are constantly producing new shoots. By fostering these young trees and giving them room to thrive, we can ensure the longevity of your aspen grove. Thinning overcrowded areas allows sunlight to reach young shoots, encouraging healthy growth and creating a balanced stand of trees. Ask us about the negative impacts or landscape fabrics!

4. Boosting Soil Health with Nutrient Supplements

Let’s face it—Durango’s soil isn’t always the friendliest. Through soil injection or trunk injection systems, we deliver vital nutrients directly to your trees’ stem and roots, improving resilience against stress and disease. Think of it as a vitamin boost for your aspens!

5. Managing Moisture with Soil Injection Systems

Drought is a major contributor to SAD. Our moisture control systems (ArborJet- NutriRoot) help your trees get the water they need, even during dry spells. Proper hydration supports their natural defenses, making them less vulnerable to infections like Cytospora canker.

Talking Solutions, Not Just Problems

When you talk to your aspens, let them know you’re bringing in the professionals. “Momentum Tree Experts are on their way,” you can say this reassuringly. Aspens are one of our favorite trees and we commit to learning how to sustain them in this challenging ecosystem. “They’re like the tree doctors, but cooler—and they climb trees and help your roots.” We’re here to not just solve problems but create a long-term plan for preserving your aspen trees and your property’s natural beauty.

A Little Humor Never Hurts

Trees may not laugh, but their owners sure can. If you’re swapping stories with your aspens, here’s one to try:

“Why do trees make terrible detectives?”
“They keep barking up the wrong tree!”

Alright, we’ll stick to tree care instead of comedy, but a little laughter is always a good way to keep things light—even when dealing with heavy branches!

Why Choose Momentum Tree Experts?

Based here in Durango, we know the unique challenges our local trees face. From extreme weather to pest challenges, we’ve seen it all—and we have the expertise to keep your trees standing tall.
